This tutorial demonstrates how to make the hexagonally-expanding Crenelated-3 Sheet weave (https://chainmaillers.com/maillepedia/240/).
Ring sizes used:
Small: .032" WD, .140" ID
Large: .063" WD, .333" ID
The small rings must have an ID (inner diameter) that is at least slightly larger than two times the WD (wire diameter) of the large rings. The ones used here are .014" larger than that difference (.140 - (2*.063) = .014") which keeps things fairly tight, so feel free to use something larger in ID. This weave works in a lot of different ring size combinations as long as the large ring size allows clearance for the small ring pockets. This is why a smaller WD is typically used for the small rings.
Rings will be referred to in this tutorial as red, green, and small.
1. Start with six small rings on one red ring.
2. Add a green ring to two small rings and add four more small rings to it.
3. Do the same as in step 2 with another green ring, and four small rings.
4. Add a third green ring with four small rings.
5. Flip it over so the red ring is on top.
6. Add a red ring to two small rings and add four small rings.
7. Add a red ring to two small rings and add three small rings.
8. Add a red ring to two small rings and add four small rings.
9. Add a red ring to two small rings and add three small rings.
10. Add a red ring to two small rings and add four small rings.
11. Add a red ring to two small rings and add three small rings. At this point, the red rings form a hexagon.
12. Flip the sheet over so the green rings are on top.
13. Add one green ring, passing through 3 small rings. This step is much different than the previous ones, and it can be difficult to feed the ring through properly. The type of connection being made is not direct, it is the result of the small rings folding inward. If you prefer, you could add the large ring to the two inner small rings then add the edge ring afterward, as this will make closing the large ring easier.
14. Add one small ring to one green and one red ring.
15. Add two more green rings, as the one added in step 13.
16. Add the two corresponding small edge rings, like those added in step 14.
17. Further expansion is shown in the upper right corner with two green rings and their corresponding small rings.
18. Flip the sheet over and add a red ring. Then add the corresponding small ring.
Expand further as needed. Omit loose small rings on finished edges.
