HP3S5-1 Paddy's Sheet, and Lotus

Photo Tutorial HP3S5-1 Paddy's Sheet, and Lotus

This tutorial demonstrates how to expand Half Persian 3 in 1 into both Paddy's Sheet (left piece in the pictures), and Half Persian 3 Sheet 5 in 1 - Lotus (right piece in the pictures). Your starter piece of Half Persian 3 in 1 must be of the same "handedness" as those pictured in steps 1 and 2 below. If you're unsure about this, please refer to this article: https://chainmaillers.com/resources/half-persian-3-in-1-left-vs-right.370 .

Ring sizes:
The rings in this tutorial are stainless steel and bronze with an actual aspect ratio of 5.8 (.361" ID, .062" WD). This value is ideal for both sheets, although Lotus (right) can be woven as low as 5.4 and still produce a nice result. You can certainly increase the AR to end up with a looser sheet.

Each of these two sheets are constructed similarly by alternating rows between Half Persian 3 in 1, and Half Persian 2 in 1. Each HP2-1 row added is unstable on its own, and can be placed into either of two lean row configurations. It is important to place them correctly in each of their respective steps to end up with the weave you are making.

Please note:
Every time in this tutorial in which you are instructed to flip the weave over, always flip top to bottom, never left to right. The first two rows in each weave in this demonstration are stainless steel. After this, it alternates between bronze and stainless steel. The two stainless steel rows are always to the left.

  1. hp3s5a_01.jpg
Start with a Half Persian 3 in 1 chain. The ones in this demonstration are eight cells long.

  2. hp3s5a_02.jpg
Flip it "upside down", or "right side up" (depending on your viewpoint).

  3. hp3s5a_03.jpg
Add the first ring (bronze) to what will become the third row. This ring passes through the top two rings of the previous row using an AE (around the eye) connection. This is the opposite type of connection to that which would be used in the construction of European 4 in 1, for example, which uses TE (through the eye) connections.

  4. hp3s5a_04.jpg
Add a second ring beside the first. It connects to the second and third rings down in the previous row, using the same AE connection type.

  5. hp3s5a_05.jpg
Add the remaining six rings for this row. The one in the lowest spot only passes through one ring. This row is clearly unstable and its rings can be shifted between positions. The fourth row will fix this.

  6. hp3s5a_06.jpg
Arrange the rings as a lean row by shifting them into the configurations shown. Remember: left is Paddy's Sheet, right is Lotus. Each one leans in the opposite direction.

  7. hp3s5a_07.jpg
Carefully flip the chain over, while retaining the correct lean row configuration. Alternately, you could swap steps 6 and 7, and arrange the rings after flipping the chain over.

  8. hp3s5a_08.jpg
Add the first ring to what will become the fourth row. Each ring in this row normally passes through 3 rings, except this first one. Each of these rings use a TE connection (through the eye). In Paddy's Sheet, this row is started at the bottom, but in Lotus, it is started at the top.

  9. hp3s5a_09.jpg
Add the second ring to this row. This ring passes through 3 rings. With Paddy's Sheet (left), it passes first through the lowest ring of the previous row, then crosses the next two with a TE connection. In Lotus (right), the ring added in this step first crosses the second and third ring down in the previous row with a TE connection, then goes around the top ring.

  10. hp3s5a_10.jpg
Add the third ring to this row, HP3-1-style. Up through one, then down through two for Paddy's Sheet, or up through two, then down through one for Lotus.

  11. hp3s5a_11.jpg
Complete this row of Half Persian 3 in 1 connectivity. The last ring in the row only passes through two rings: up 1, down 1 (AE connection).

  12. hp3s5a_12.jpg
    Flip the weave over.

  13. hp3s5a_13.jpg
Start the fifth row with a single ring connected to the top two rings of the previous row using a TE connection (up 1, down 1).

  14. hp3s5a_14.jpg
Add the second ring of this row.

  15. hp3s5a_15.jpg
Add all remaining rings to this row. The last ring at the bottom passes through only one ring from the previous row.

  16. hp3s5a_16.jpg
Arrange this HP2-1 row as shown. Notice that in Paddy's Sheet, it matches the lean row direction of the previous HP2-1-added row, however in Lotus, it leans in the opposite direction.

  17. hp3s5a_17.jpg
Carefully flip the weave over, being careful to keep the last row in the correct configuration. Alternately: flip the weave over first, then arrange the rings, as long as they end up as they are shown here.

  18. hp3s5a_18.jpg
Add the first ring of the sixth row through the bottom two rings of the previous row using a TE connection. This is quite similar to what was performed in Step 8, except notice that the first ring is added to the bottom of Lotus in this case, instead of the top.

  19. hp3s5a_19.jpg
Add the second ring of row six by going up through 1, then down through 2, as in HP3-1.

  20. hp3s5a_20.jpg
    Add the third ring.

  21. hp3s5a_21.jpg
Complete the row. The last ring (at the top) passes through 2 instead of 3 because it's at the weave's edge.

  22. hp3s5a_22.jpg
    Flip the weave over...

At this point, steps 3 through 22 can be repeated to continue. With Paddy's Sheet, you really only need to repeat steps 13 through 22 (or steps 3 through 12) - either will produce the same result. Here are the next few steps summed up:

  23. hp3s5a_23.jpg
Add HP2-1 row and arrange accordingly.

  24. hp3s5a_24.jpg
    Flip weave over.

  25. hp3s5a_25.jpg
Add first ring of eighth row. Lower position in Paddy's Sheet, Upper in Lotus.

  26. hp3s5a_26.jpg
    Complete this HP3-1 row.

  27. hp3s5a_27.jpg
Flip the weave over and add and arrange the next HP2-1 row.

  28. hp3s5a_28.jpg
Flip the weave over and add the first ring for row 10. Lower position, both.

  29. hp3s5a_29.jpg
    Finish HP3-1 row.
