Deco Captive Pearl Necklace​

Capture beads using intermediary rings to get a different look and add rolling rings to accentuate.

Materials​

For a 65cm (25.5 inches) necklace, you will need:

• 264 large silver anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 6.7mm, WD 1.2mm - A
• 48 medium silver anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 5.2mm, WD 0.81mm - B
• 48 small silver anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 0.81mm - C
• 16 terracotta Czech glass pearls - 6mm
• 16 butterscotch Czech glass pearls - 6mm
• 16 bronze Czech glass pearls - 6mm
• two scraps of wire

Tools:

• two pairs of smooth jawed chain nose, flat nose, or bent nose pliers

Instructions​

1. Link two closed large rings A and two medium closed rings B with two large rings A. Lay out the rings as shown with the two medium rings B on the right hand side.
   
   
   
   
   
2. Attach a piece of scrap wire to the two medium rings B (picture 1).
   
   Close three large rings A and thread onto the scrap wire. Move the rings so that they cover the two medium rings B. (picture 2).
   
   Close two and open two large rings A. Link one large ring A to the two medium rings B and add the two closed large rings A before closing. Repeat with the second large ring A. Remove the scrap of wire (picture 3).
   
   
   
   
   
3. Open the two pairs of large rings A just added between your thumb and forefinger (picture 1).
   
   Add one bead (picture 2).
   
   Trap the bead by joining the last pair of large rings A with one small ring C (picture 3).
   
   
   
   
   
4. Link a second small ring C to the last pair of large rings A.
   
   
   
   
   
5. Close two and open two large rings A. Link one large ring A to the two small rings C and add the two closed large rings A before closing. Repeat with the second large ring A (picture 1).
   
   Capture one bead the same colour as the previous bead and capture with two medium rings B.
   
   
   
   
   
6. Attach a piece of scrap wire to the two medium rings B.
   
   
   
   
   
7. Close three large rings A and thread onto the scrap wire. Move the rings so that they cover the two medium rings B.
   
   Close two and open two large rings A. Link one large ring A to the two medium rings B and add the two closed large rings A before closing. Repeat with the second large ring A. Remove the scrap of wire.
   
   
   
   
   
8. Repeat steps 3-7 until the desired length, ending with step 7.
   
   If you are using more than one colour, keep each round of steps 3-7 the same colour. In steps 9 and 10 you will add the last pair of beads - make sure the end colour keeps to your colour pattern.
   
   Using two colours? Make sure you end on the same colour as you started.
   
   Using three colours? Make sure you end with colour 2.
   
   
   
   
   
9. Bring the two ends of the necklace together (picture 1).
   
   Capture one bead of the same colour in each end and hold in place with a piece of scrap wire (picture 2).
   
   
   
   
   
10. Link the two ends together with one small ring C (picture 1).
    
    Remove the scrap wires and repeat with a second small ring C (picture 2).
    
    

Variations​

• Use a complementary or contrasting colour for the rolling ring.
• Choose shades of the same colour bead, keeping them in blocks to give a graduated look.
• Use a dark coloured ring such as black with a pale bead like light pink.
