- Start by making a loose chain of Dragontail using rings of the following sizes: large "scale" rings= 18g wire x 12mm O.D., small rings= 18g wire x 10mm O.D.
- After making the Dragontail to the desired length, add an extra row of small rings to the chain, as shown. One will serve as the first top row of small rings, the other will be the first for the bottom.
- Add the first large "scale" ring of the second scale row (what will become the left vertical edge) by going through two small rings in the chain that'll later become the 1st small ring row.
- Step 4 is about adding a second row of small rings & a second row of large "scale" rings. Add the second large "scale" ring for the 2nd "scale" row. before adding it, thread it through a new small ring which hasn't been added yet (the new bottom small ring), then pass the large "scale" ring (clockwise) through the old bottom ring, another new small ring (the new top small ring), then the old top ring; continue to pass the large "scale" ring through the next two small rings (on the right) from the first row of small rings & close the large "scale" ring. In short, while passing clockwise through the small rings, the large "scale" ring goes through 4 small rings on the left (2 old & 2 new), & the 2 on the right - the next old top & bottom rings (from the first small ring row).
- Repeat step 4 all the way along the length until the large & small rings are arranged in the way shown; note that while the large "scale" rings go all the way along the length of what was the Dragontail chain & is now the width of the patch, the small rings don't go all the way, instead go to the second large "scale" ring from the right vertical edge of the patch.
- Add the first large "scale" ring of the third "scale" row at the left edge of the patch. compared to step 3, the large ring goes through 4 small rings (2 old rings from the first row of small rings, & 2 new rings from the second) instead of through 2.
- Add the second large "scale" ring to the third "scale" row. It passes (clockwise) through the first new top & bottom small rings of the second small ring row, then the third old top small ring, the third new top small ring, the third old bottom ring, & the third new bottom ring.
- Repeat step 7 all the way across the width of the patch until the last large "scale" ring you've attached is the third-to-last from the bottom of it's "scale" row (steps 9 & 10 deal with the remaining two large "scale" rings in the third scale row). Note - the way steps 7 & 8's large "scale" rings pass through the small rings going clockwise is opposite that of steps 4 & 5 - step 7 & 8's large "scale" rings pass clockwise through 2 on the left & 4 on the right, instead of the pass through 4 on the left & 2 on the right found in steps 4 & 5.
- Attach the second-to-last large "scale" ring in the third "scale" row. While making it pass through the third-to-last new small top & bottom rings of the second small ring row (going clockwise), pass the large ring through the old top ring, then add a new top ring, then pass it through the old bottom ring, then add a new bottom ring - this is how you get the last small rings for the second row of small rings. Note that in the photo (with the longnose pliers), the large ring is still open, & has been rotated clockwise & therefore might seem like I attached it by going anti-clockwise, which isn't the case, it's just to show how to attach the last new top & bottom small rings for the second row of small rings.
- Attach the last large "scale" ring of the third "scale" row to the patch as shown.
- Repeat from step 3 until your patch reaches the desired length. Note - the patches' width is determined by the length of the initial Dragontail chain, but the length of the patch is determined by the number of rows expanding down from the initial Dragontail chain. While working on the patch, the initial chain is the top, & what looks like the top in the pictures is actually the bottom (to show the small rings). The photo below shows the finished patch & the underside before being flipped over horizontally, so the current left side (with the name tag) made while expanding the patch downwards now becomes the new right side, leaving the name tag on the top right of the patch.
