- 9 teal Czech glass glass rings
- silver plated jubilee heart Tierracast toggle #4
Tools:
- two pairs of smooth jawed chain nose, flat nose, or bent nose pliers
Instructions
- Link one large ring (D) to one glass ring and add two closed medium rings (C) before closing. Link a second large ring (D) to the same glass ring and the two closed rings.
Position the rings as shown so that the two medium rings (C) sandwich the glass ring.
Make eight of these units.
- Link four large rings (D) to one glass ring and lay out as shown in the left-hand picture.
On one side of the glass ring, weave one medium ring (C) through the four large rings just added. Repeat on the other side of the glass ring (centre picture).
The right-hand picture shows how the unit should look from the side with the glass ring sandwiched between the two medium rings (C).
- The rings added in each of the following steps are shown in red for clarity.
Take the glass ring unit made in step 2 and link two small rings (B) to one pair of the large rings (D).
- Weave one large ring (D) between the two large rings attached to the glass ring and weave around the small rings (B) added in the previous step. The picture below shows this ring added from two different viewpoints.
- You will now lengthen the chain by adding one of the glass ring units made in step 1. This part of the weave is based on the helms weave.
Weave one large ring (D) through the glass ring and the two closed rings (C) that sandwich it, and link to the two small rings (B) of your chain.
Weave a second large ring (D) through the same side of the glass ring and two sandwiching closed rings (C). Link to the small jump rings (B), making sure it sits on the other side of the centre large ring (D) added in step 4, as shown in the right-hand picture.
- You will now add four medium rings (C) to echo the Byzantine weave by weaving into each corner of the helms weave link made in the previous step.
Link one medium ring (C) through the intersection of the three large rings above the small rings (B). Repeat with the remaining three rings above and below the pair of small rings (B) as shown.
- Repeat steps 3-6 until your chain is the desired length.
- To finish the end of the chain, position one closed large ring between the end two large rings (D) as in the left-hand picture.
Weave one medium ring (C) through the intersection of the three rings. Repeat with a second medium ring (C) as shown in the right-hand picture.
Repeat at the other end of the chain.
- In this step you will be joining the medium edge rings (C) added in step 6 using two tiny rings (A) each time.
On one side of a glass ring unit, fold two medium rings (C) so that they are touching. Link together using two tiny rings (A).
Repeat along both sides of the chain.
- Using one clasp ring each time, attach the toggle ring and toggle bar to each end of the chain.
Variations
- To make the chain into a necklace that will sit well, you will need to make a v-shaped necklace with two lengths of chain and join with a larger ring or focal element.
- Use different coloured glass rings such as teal, red, sapphire and amethyst for a jewel-like look or different shades of one colour.
- Try different coloured anodised rings such as black with opaque white glass rings or champagne with a mix of autumn coloured glass rings.
