Mobius Knots
Make two different mobius link bracelets using the same sized rings.
Stabilised Single Chain Moorish Rose
The Moorish Rose weave (by Digm) is a way of linking the mobius weave within each link. However, a single chain is fairly unstable and will flop about. Adding two rings at each joining point maintains the look of Moorish Rose and holds it together.
Materials
For a 19cm bracelet, you will need:- 64 large bright aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 8.5mm, WD 1.29mm
- 56 bronze saw cut jump rings, ID 8.6mm, WD 1.29mm
- 28 medium bright aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 6.9mm, WD 1.29mm
- 4 small bright aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 5mm, WD 1.29mm
- silver plated medium wrapped Tierracast toggle
- two pairs of smooth jawed chain nose, flat nose, or bent nose pliers
Instructions
- The Moorish Rose mobius flower is made up of six large rings (id 8.6mm, 1.29mm) - open five rings and close one ring. Link one closed large bright aluminium ring with one large bright aluminium ring. Lay the rings out as shown in the first picture.
Link one large bright aluminium ring through the centre of the first two rings and lay on top of the first two rings.
Continue to add the remaining three open rings by linking one large bright aluminium ring through the centre of all the rings added so far and lay on top of the previous rings added.
- Link one small bright aluminium ring (id 5mm, 1.29mm) through the centre of the mobius flower made in step 1.
- Open six bronze rings. Link one bronze ring up through the fifth and sixth rings of the last mobius flower made so that the ring is positioned at the upper part of the last mobius flower (see the first picture).
Link a second bronze ring through the same fifth and sixth rings of the last mobius flower following the same pathway as the first bronze ring. Take this bronze ring through the centre of the first bronze ring linked and close. Position the second bronze ring on top of the first ring.
Weave a third bronze ring from underneath and through the centre of the first two bronze rings. Orientate the ring as shown in the third picture and position on top of the previous two rings.
- Weave a fourth bronze ring from underneath and through the centre of the first three bronze rings. Position the ring on top of the previous three rings.
Continue to add the remaining two bronze rings by linking one ring through the centre of all the rings added so far and lay on top of the previous rings added.
- To stabilise the mobius flowers, link the new mobius flower to the previous mobius flower using two medium bright aluminium rings (id 6.9mm, 1.29mm).
- Repeat steps 3-5 using alternate sets of six bright aluminium and bronze large rings in step 3 and stabilising with two medium bright aluminium rings as in step 4.
- When your bracelet is long enough, link one small bright aluminium ring to the last mobius flower and attach the toggle ring before closing.
Link one small bright aluminium ring to the toggle bar. Using one small bright aluminium ring, link the ring and toggle bar to the small ring at the other end of the bracelet.
Knotted Mobius
Tight mobius knots are made using pairs of rings and adding as many pairs as needed to fill the centre of the rings. This chain uses two sizes of rings.
Materials
For a 21cm bracelet, you will need:- 9 bronze saw cut jump rings, ID 8.6mm, WD 1.29mm
- 60 medium bright aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 6.9mm, WD 1.29mm
- 34 small bright aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 5mm, WD 1.29mm
- silver plated medium wrapped Tierracast toggle
Instructions
- To make the smaller knot, you will need six small bright aluminium rings (id 5mm, 1.29mm) - two closed rings and four open rings. Link the two closed small bright aluminium rings with two open small bright aluminium ring. Lay out the rings as shown in the first picture - it is important to start with the first two rings in the same orientation to ensure that your mobius knot looks the same each time.
Link two small bright aluminium rings through the centre of the two pairs of rings you have just joined (the centre is marked with an arrow in the first picture). Lay the rings just added (shown with red dots) as shown in the second picture.
Link two small bright aluminium rings through the centre of the three pairs of rings you have linked together. This last pair of rings added is shown with blue dots in the third picture (the rings added prior to this are still shown with red dots).
Repeat to make five small mobius knots.
- To make the larger knot, you will need twelve medium bright aluminium rings (id 6.9mm, 1.29mm) - two closed rings and ten open rings. Link the two closed medium bright aluminium rings with two open medium bright aluminium ring. Lay out the rings as shown in the first picture - it is important to start with the first two rings in the same orientation to ensure that your mobius knot looks the same each time.
Link two medium bright aluminium rings through the centre of the two pairs of rings you have just joined (the centre is marked with an arrow in the first picture). Lay the rings just added (shown with red dots) as shown in the second picture.
Link two medium bright aluminium rings through the centre of the three pairs of rings you have linked together. This last pair of rings added is shown with blue dots in the third picture (the rings added prior to this are still shown with red dots).
Link two medium bright aluminium rings through the centre of the four pairs of rings you have linked together. This last pair of rings added is shown with orange dots in the fourth picture (the rings added prior to this are still shown with blue dots).
Link two medium bright aluminium rings through the centre of the five pairs of rings you have linked together. This last pair of rings added is shown with purple dots in the fifth picture (the rings added prior to this are still shown with orange dots).
Repeat to make five large mobius knots.
- The first picture shows the small mobius knot from above, whilst the second picture shows the small mobius knot from the side.
Weave one small bright aluminium ring (id 5mm, 1.29mm) through the pair of side rings of one small mobius knot, making sure you weave the ring between two pairs of rings as shown in the side view picture.
- The top picture shows the small mobius knot followed by a large mobius knot from above, whilst the bottom picture shows the same knots from the side.
Weave one bronze ring through the pair of side rings of one small mobius knot in between two pairs of rings as shown. Weave the same bronze ring through the side rings of one large mobius knot, again making sure you weave the ring between two pairs of rings as shown in the side view picture.
- Repeat step 4 to link the remaining mobius knots alternating between small and large knots. Link one small bright aluminium ring (id 5mm, 1.29mm) to the last knot at the end of the chain.
- Link the toggle bar and ring to each end of the chain using one small bright aluminium ring (id 5mm, 1.29mm) each time.
Variations
- Make matching earrings using as many mobius links as you fancy (bear in mind that bright aluminium is light and bronze is a heavier metal).
- So the weave sits correctly, make a short necklace chain to sit on your collar bone. For a longer chain, make two equal lengths and join with a large ring - hang a focal bead(s) or a short length of the same mobius knot chain.
- Use other metals such as copper or jewellers brass. For the smaller rings rd4-50 and rd6-50, you can use anodised aluminium.
