Scherzo

CGI Tutorial Scherzo

Author's Note
I wanted to contribute my tutorials to Chainmaillers.com to help ensure that the entire chainmaille community has access to them. The tutorials are presented here with the same images and text from my old site CGMaille. I hope they continue to help inspire you to learn and create many amazing pieces!

Weave Background
Scherzo is a weave by PrairieGal of Beaded-Baubles. It's kind of an über-Byzantine.

Aspect Ratio & Ring Sizes
There are two main sizes for Scherzo. The large rings are 16swg 5/16" and the small rings are 20awg 3/16". If you find that those sizes are too floppy for your taste, you can substitute 20awg 5/32" rings for the two folded back rings.

Metric sizes - approximately 1.6mm wire/8mm ID; 0.8mm wire/4.8mm or 4mm ID.

Also, you can substitute neoprene rings for the large rings, with minor tweaking to the construction.

Tutorial Color Scheme
New rings are steel and bronze, old rings are silver and gold.

Step 1: Close four small rings and put them on a big ring.

Step 2: Put two small rings through all four small rings from the previous step. Fold the two new rings back so they're on either side of the large ring.

Step 3: Pass a small ring through the two rings you just added. This ring should go between the middle two rings of the group of four.

Step 4: Repeat Step 3 with two more small rings. These should go through the remaining gaps in the group of four.

Step 5: Close four small rings and put them on a large ring. Pass the large ring through the three small rings from Steps 3 & 4.

Step 6: Pass two small rings through the next group of four, and fold them back.

Step 7: Pass a small ring through the two rings you just added, making sure it's in the middle of the group of four.

Step 8: Pass two more small rings through on either side of the ring you just added, connecting them to the two folded back rings.

Now just repeat Steps 5 - 8 until you get the chain as long as you want it!
