Vipera Berus​

Vipera Berus, a weave by Loke, makes a banded chain that would be great for men and women.

Materials​

For a 20cm bracelet, you will need:

• 88 black saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm
• 20 ice pink saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm
• 20 ice blue saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm
• 20 ice green saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm
• 20 lavender saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm
• small black finish Anna's Tierracast toggle, 9.8x13mm

Tools:

• two pairs of smooth jawed chain nose, flat nose, or bent nose pliers

Instructions​

1. Using the black anodised aluminium rings, make a 1-in-1 chain. Initially make a chain about thirty rings long and add to the chain as needed. Lay out the start of the chain as shown on your bead mat - the rings are numbered to help show how to position the rings.
   
   
   
   
   
2. Move ring no.2 above ring no. 1. Flip ring no. 3 over and slide it down beneath ring no. 1. Move ring no. 4 up to lay on top of ring no. 2.
   
   
   
   
   
3. Open two ice green rings. Weave one ice green ring through the centres of rings no. 1 and 3 on the lower part of your chain. You will need to pick the chain up to close the ring. Reposition the chain as shown.
   
   Tip: Steps 3-4 are perhaps the trickiest - as always the start of a new chain/weave is the hardest part. If you are having problems getting started, pin black rings 1 and 2 to your bead mat and close the first ice green rings enough so that they don't fall off. You can return to them once they are both linked to the black rings and close the rings properly.
   
   
   
   
   
4. Make sure the first two upper black rings lay as shown with the second ring on top of the first ring. Weave one ice green ring through the centres of the first two upper black rings.
   
   
   
   
   
5. Flip the next loose black ring over and slide it down to the lower row of rings so that it is positioned underneath the previous ring, as shown. The next loose ring will naturally want to lay overlapping the upper black ring.
   
   
   
   
   
6. Open two ice blue rings. Weave one ice blue ring down through the ice green and the black ring to which the ice green ring is already linked. Weave the ice blue ring up through the black ring you have just moved into position in the previous step. Make sure that you weave the ice blue ring on the inside of the ice green ring, as shown.
   
   The upper picture shows the chain from above and the lower picture shows the chain from the side.
   
   
   
   
   
7. Repeat step 6 and weave with the second ice blue ring through the next two upper black rings, making sure that you weave the ice blue ring on the inside of the ice green ring.
   
   
   
   
   
8. Position the next two loose black rings as in step 5.
   
   Open two lavender rings. Weave one lavender ring down through the ice blue ring and the black ring to which the ice blue ring is already linked. Weave the lavender ring up through the black ring you have just moved into position in the previous step. Make sure that you weave the lavender ring on the outside of the ice blue ring, as shown.

9. Repeat step 8 and weave with the second lavender ring through the next two upper black rings, making sure that you weave the lavender ring on the outside of the ice blue ring.
   
   
   
   
   
10. Open two ice pink rings. Repeat steps 5-7 to add the ice pink rings so that they are linked on the inside of the lavender rings.
    
    Continue adding the rings to the black chain in the same colour order (ice green, ice blue, lavender and ice pink), making sure that you alternate how you weave the rings - either to the inside or to the outside of the previous rings.
    
    
    
    
    
11. When your chain is the desired length, link one black ring through the first two black rings and add the toggle ring. Repeat at the other end of the chain to link three black rings and the toggle bar.
    
    
    
    

Variations​

• Use a rainbow mix of colours with black anodised aluminium.
• Try gold rings with jewel colours or champagne rings and Autumn colours.
• Jump rings sizes for size variation are:
  
  • rd5-64, id 5.9mm, 1.6mm for a chunky weave
  • rd25-40, id 3.8mm, 1.00mm for a medium weave
  • rd15-32, id 3mm, 0.81mm for a finer weave
