Viperscale​

Materials​

For a 19cm bracelet, you will need:

• 99 champagne aluminium jump rings, ID 6.7mm, WD 1.2mm
• 62 ice blue aluminium jump rings, ID 6.7mm, WD 1.2mm
• 2 champagne aluminium jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm - to attach the clasp
• brass oxide jubilee heart Tierracast toggle

Jump rings sizes (with an AR of around 5.6) that can be used for the Viperscale weave are:

• ID 8.3mm, WD 1.6mm for a chunky weave
• ID 6.7mm, WD 1.2mm a larger medium weave - this is the size in which the bracelet is made
• ID 6mm, WD 1.02mm a finer medium weave - try copper or bronze and bright aluminium
• ID 5mm, WD 0.81mm a looser fine weave - try copper or bronze and bright aluminium

Tools:

• two pairs of smooth jawed chain nose, flat nose, or bent nose pliers

Useful Tips Before You Start:

• One of the tricky parts of this weave is that you need to turn the weave over; essentially you are adding champagne rings with the top uppermost and adding the ice blue rings with the weave turned over. To see which way up you are, refer to the pictures in step 1 and the position of the central champagne ring - this is the top uppermost. Continue to check the position of this central ring to make sure the weave is facing the correct way up.
• This weave can be broken down into three steps using five rings - two of the central colour (ice blue) and three of the edge colour (champagne). Have small piles of open rings ready to use so that you don't have to keep putting the chain down to open the next ring.
• This is a largely pictorial step-by-step tutorial as you need to look carefully as to how the rings are woven. You do need to refer to the written instructions to know when to turn the weave. I have written TURN THE WEAVE OVER in the instructions for those who like a quick-glance read.
• For left-handed maillers, turn the pictures upside down to help you place the rings correctly.

Instructions​

1. The rings used to make the weave are the id 6.7mm, 1.2mm rings apart from the two small rings used to attach the clasp.
   
   Link one champagne ring to two closed champagne rings. Lay out the rings exactly as shown in the left hand picture below with the rings in the same orientation.
   
   Weave one ice blue ring through the upper outer champagne ring and the intersection of the lower outer and central champagne rings. Lay out the rings as shown (centre picture).
   
   The next ring added is shown in red. Weave a second ice blue ring in front of the last ring added, and through the lower outer champagne ring and the intersection of the upper outer and central champagne rings (right hand picture).
   
   
   
   
   
2. The left hand picture shows what your weave should look like after completing step 1.
   
   The next ring added is shown in red. Weave one champagne ring through the outer parts of the ice blue rings added in the last step (centre picture).
   
   The right hand picture shows what your weave should look like having added the above ring.
   
   
   
   
   
3. The next two rings added are shown in red. Both rings are woven through the same pathway with one folded up and the other folded down. Study the left hand and centre pictures to see the pathway.
   
   Weave one champagne ring behind the centre champagne ring added in the previous step, through the intersection of the two ice blue rings and through the centre champagne ring so that the ring you are weaving is now in front of the centre champagne ring (left hand picture).
   
   Weave a second champagne ring in the same way - behind the centre champagne ring added in the previous step, through the intersection of the two ice blue rings and through the centre champagne ring so that the ring you are weaving is now in front of the centre champagne ring (centre picture). Position the two rings added as shown.
   
   The right hand picture shows what your weave should look like having added the above rings.
   
   
   
   
   
4. TURN THE WEAVE OVER. Compare the last picture in step 3 to the 1st picture in step 4. You turn the weave to make it easier to link the ice blue rings.
   
   The next two rings added are shown in red. Weave one ice blue ring through the lower outer champagne ring and the intersection of the upper outer and central champagne rings (2nd picture).
   
   Weave a second ice blue ring in front of the last ring added, and through the upper outer champagne ring and the intersection of the lower outer and central champagne rings (3rd picture).
   
   The right hand picture shows what your weave should look like having added the above rings.
   
   
   
   
   
5. TURN THE WEAVE OVER. Compare the last picture in step 4 to the left hand in step 5. You turn the weave to make it easier to link the three champagne rings in the next two steps.
   
   The next ring added is shown in red. Weave one champagne ring through the outer parts of the ice blue rings added in the last step (centre picture).

6. The next two rings added are shown in red - this step is the same as step 3.
   
   Weave one champagne ring behind the centre champagne ring added in the previous step, through the intersection of the two ice blue rings and through the centre champagne ring so that the ring you are weaving is now in front of the centre champagne ring.
   
   Weave a second champagne ring in the same way - behind the centre champagne ring added in the previous step, through the intersection of the two ice blue rings and through the centre champagne ring so that the ring you are weaving is now in front of the centre champagne ring (left hand picture). Position the two rings added as shown.
   
   The right hand picture shows what your weave should look like having added the above rings.
   
   
   
   
   
7. Repeat steps 4-6 until the weave is the required length.
   
   
   
   
   
8. Link the toggle ring to the centre champagne ring of the weave with one small champagne ring. Repeat at the end of the weave to attach the toggle bar.
   
   

Variations​

• For a classy look, try champagne with matt silver (white) rings.
• Use more colours for the central rings (ice blue in the project) - a pastel or rainbow mix with black rings instead of champagne.
• Use two alternate colours for the centre rings, like black and red with gold rings.
