Book details

Chain maille patterns and weaves that take jewelry design into new frontiers!

Jewelry artists will enjoy a collection of new, less-common weaves and challenging projects that inspire and educate.

Author Karen Karon begins by reviewing basic chain maille weaves in order to set the stage for the more complex weaves in this book. She explains techniques needed when working beyond the basics: methods for closing a weave, working with micro rings, working large scale, and using alternative materials in weaves. The book is then divided into 4 sections, each devoted to a particular type of weave: new Persian weaves, Elf-based weaves, Hybrid weaves, and Scale Maille weaves that incorporate sheet metal scales into traditional weaves for a striking effect. Sprinkled throughout the illustrated step-by-step instructions for each weave technique are valuable tips from Karen to help ensure a beautiful finished piece.

Pros
  • More info than her first book, and more weaves
Cons
  • Wish she would publish even more
Another fantastic book from Karon. If you're just starting out, check out her book Chain Maille Jewelry Workshop first. If you already have that one, then this will make a great addition to your library. Her tutorials work for me, plain and simple. I bought this because she's fab and she covers more weaves, even though I'm not into scales.

In this book Karon covers: Persian weaves (GSG, HP 3-1 sheet, Arkham and Arkham sheet, Crotalus, Viperscale), Elf weaves (Elfweave and Elfsheet, Tiffany weave), Hybrid weaves (Interwoven 4-1 and sheet, Dragonback, Persian Dragonscale), and Scale maille (traditional and linear weaving).

Pros
  • Excellent selection of tutorials, well written, easy to follow
Cons
  • None at all.
Great book by a fabulous author.

I was one of the first to purchase this book as an electronic download.

I was very impressed with the quality and layout, everything is set out in a perfectly logical order allowing the student to progress in a sensible manner. Great for building confidence, with lots of additional hints, tips and tricks to make weaving a fabulous piece of jewellery easy and fun.

The only downside for me, was by time the book was released, I'd already learnt how to do the weaves contained therein so there was nothing new for me to try.

It is however an excellent source of information and a book I keep for reference when I'm having one of those 'mail block' moments, personally - I wouldn't be without it.

Pros
  • While the weaves are advanced, anyone with a strong foundation with E4-1 & Half Persian weaves should be able to complete them. Suggested ring sizes from multiple vendors are given for each weave. Multiple methods for weaving some projects.
Cons
  • Still not crazy about illustrated steps. Some of these weaves are quite complex and the illustrations sometimes get a little "busy". However, I'm not sure if photos would have been much better.
Advanced Chain Maille Jewelry Workshop: Weaving with Rings and Scale Maille by Karen Karon is the perfect sequel to the first book in the series. (Read our review of the first book here.)

This book picks up where the first left off and it takes off running. After a quick review of E4-1 & Half Persian (the foundation weaves for most of the projects in the book) it jumps right into some of the more advanced weaves in those families. Weaves, like the first book, increase in complexity as you progress through each chapter. Unlike the first book, you can jump to any chapter as all the weaves in the book are equally "advanced". There is also a wonderful chapter on working with scales. All tutorials are, once again, shown with full color illustrations.

This book is amazing on its own. Pair it with the first volume in the series and you have an unstoppable primer on the art of chain maille.
