Pros
  • -excellent basics if you're just starting out, and as a resource for later tutes which do not include the basics -good explanations of common terminology
Cons
  • None
I used this as my bible when I first started out, and it needs to be rebound now...I frequently go back to it for refreshers when I haven't done a weave in a while.
It is covered in sticky notes. :)
It also has the best explanation of (and formula for) AR that I've seen.

Pros
  • A ton of useful info, tutorials that make it clear
Cons
  • She doesn't cover every weave I'd like to learn
I have many chain maille books - this was my first and it's still one of my absolute favorites. I feel lucky to have had this book as my intro to chain maille. She goes through weaves, and then you can use your own creativity to experiment and design. This book was so clear for me that when I started out, I really didn't understand why others have a tough time with Dragonscale, for example. There's so much great info - some of which might not all make sense right away to a beginner, but as you continue you'll get it and refer back to the charts. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Pros
  • Helps you build a solid foundation to create your own projects. Many weaves are shown with multiple ways to create. Steps given for speed weaving some weaves.
Cons
  • No projects based upon the Japanese family of weaves. I personally like photo steps instead of illustrations.
Chain Maille Jewelry Workshop by Karen Karon should be a staple of any maillers bookshelf.

This is not your standard chain maille project book. While there are projects in it, the focus is on mailling techniques. Beginners will find all of the information useful and those with some experience already under their belts may find some new tricks.

The book is meant to be read from beginning to end with weaves in order of increasing difficulty. Each chapter gives you instructions on creating base weaves and works up to giving you a project that is built upon the previous contents of the chapter. Tips, "things to try", & multiple ways to create each weave are found throughout the book. All tutorial steps are shown with full color illustrations.

In short, this book lives up to it's promise of being "the ultimate technique based guide" for chain maille.
