Photo Tutorial Hikaru Flower Bracelet

Author's Note
Our projects were very popular during the lifetime of our business and we wanted to ensure they continued to provide inspiration for chain maillers whatever their experience. It's a pleasure to see they will live on with Chainmaillers.com

Hikaru Flower Bracelet

Hikaru Flowers have a 3D quality to them and are created using the Japanese-based Hikaru weave by Lunautumn. It is a simple weave in construction but the small rings may be fiddly.

The component flower can be used in many ways - this tutorial includes additional information for making a necklace and earrings.

Materials

For a 19.5cm bracelet, you will need:
  • 147 small gold anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 2.7mm, WD 0.81mm
  • 147 small red anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 2.7mm, WD 0.81mm
  • 32 small silver anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 2.7mm, WD 0.81mm
  • 35 medium silver anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 5.9mm, WD 1.2mm
  • 7 large bright aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 8.6mm, WD 1.00mm
  • 3 silver anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 3.8mm, WD 1.00mm - clasp rings
  • silver plated small wrapped Tierracast toggle - 9 x 12mm
Tools:
  • two pairs of smooth jawed chain nose, flat nose, or bent nose pliers

Instructions

  1. Close twenty one small gold rings and open seven silver medium rings. Using one large bright aluminium ring, link fourteen closed gold rings (left hand picture).

Weave one medium silver ring through two of the centre gold rings and add two small closed gold rings before closing (centre picture).

Weave one medium silver ring through the next pair of small gold centre rings and one of the additional small gold rings just added. Add one small closed gold ring before closing (right hand picture).

  2. Continue adding one small medium silver ring through the next pair of gold centre rings and the one small gold ring previously added. Each time before closing the silver ring, add one small closed gold ring. Repeat until you have added six medium silver rings.

  3. For the last medium silver ring, weave through the small closed gold ring just added, the remaining two small gold centre rings and the last closed small gold ring added at the beginning of step 1. The flower is very floppy but will tighten up as you add small red rings in steps 4-6.

  4. You will now add the very centre small red rings. Weave one small red ring through one of the small gold centre rings linking the medium silver ring and the adjacent small gold centre ring which links the next medium silver ring. Make sure your red ring is flipped towards the centre of the flower (left hand picture).

Link the next two small gold centre rings in the same way (centre picture).

Continue adding small red rings until you have linked seven small red rings to the centre small gold rings. The small red rings added will overlap - this is part of the design, which gives it a 3D quality.

  5. For this step, you will add small red rings, linking the small gold centre rings to the small gold rings connecting the medium silver petal rings together.

Referring to the left hand picture, weave one small red through one small gold centre ring and one of the small gold petal rings.

Continue weaving one small red ring through the next small gold centre ring and small gold petal ring (centre and right hand picture). As you work around the flower, it will tighten - the last rings can be a little awkward to weave.

  6. Repeat steps 1-5 until you have seven hikaru flowers.

  7. Each flower has seven petals. Lay out the flowers so that the single petal of one flower fits between two petals of the next flower. Using two small silver rings each time, link the single petal of one flower to each of the two petals of the next flower.

  8. At the two petal end of the chain, link two small silver rings to each petal. Link the four small silver rings with one silver clasp ring. Attach the toggle ring to the clasp ring just added (left hand picture).

At the one petal end of the chain, link two small silver rings to the petal and two small silver rings to these small silver rings. Attach to toggle bar to the last small silver rings using one clasp ring (right hand picture).

Hikaru Flower Bib Necklace

Materials

For a 38cm bib necklace, you will need:
  • 168 small gold anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 2.7mm, WD 0.81mm
  • 88 small purple anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 2.7mm, WD 0.81mm
  • 63 small ice blue anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 2.7mm, WD 0.81mm
  • 21 small matt silver anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 2.7mm, WD 0.81mm
  • 32 small silver anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 2.7mm, WD 0.81mm
  • 56 medium silver anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 5.9mm, WD 1.2mm
  • 8 large bright aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 8.6mm, WD 1.00mm
  • 27cm stainless steel cable chain - 6x4.5x1mm
  • silver plated lobster clasp - 12mm

Instructions

  • Repeat steps 1 - 5 to make four hikaru flowers in purple, three flowers in ice blue and one flower in matt silver.

Note: All the hikaru flowers have the same coloured centre rings as used in steps 1-3. The rings added in steps 4-5 are different colours. To give separation to the flowers, use a neutral colour such as matte silver for one of the flowers (positioned at 12 o'clock when looking at the lower four flowers of the necklace piece).

  • The flowers have an odd number of petals so, with careful reference to the picture below, lay out your flowers. Using pairs of small silver rings, join the flowers together.

  • Decide how long you want to make your necklace and cut two pieces of chain to the desired length. The length of the necklace we made sits on the collarbone but you may wish to make it longer.

Open the end links of the chains and attach to each single petal ring of the last purple flower (please refer to the main necklace picture). Open the end link of one chain and attach the lobster clasp.
