CGI Tutorial Viperscale

Author's Note
I wanted to contribute my tutorials to Chainmaillers.com to help ensure that the entire chainmaille community has access to them. The tutorials are presented here with the same images and text from my old site CGMaille. I hope they continue to help inspire you to learn and create many amazing pieces!

Weave Background
This is a variant of GSG, invented by Lady Lockeout. Viperscale has a neat football-shaped cross-section and is very slinky, reminiscent of its namesake.

Aspect Ratio & Ring Sizes
Viperscale takes rings with an aspect ratio of around 6.6. 20awg 3/16" works; I haven't tried any other sizes yet.
Metric sizes - approximately 0.8mm wire/4.8mm ID.

Tutorial Color Scheme
Old rings are silver, new rings are gold.

Note that the chain will be quite floppy for the first several steps. You may need to rearrange the rings to get them back to the configuration in the pictures. Twisty-ties or wire may be useful to keep the rings in place.

Step 1: Connect 2 rings to a third.

Step 2: Slide the two side rings in toward the middle, making sure the left ring ends up in front of the right ring.

Step 3: Open a ring and pass it through the eye formed by the left and middle ring, behind middle ring and back out through the right ring.

Step 4: Open a ring and pass it through the left ring, around the middle ring and back out, through the eye formed by the middle and right ring. Make sure this ring is above, and does not pass through the ring added in the last step.

Step 5: Pass a ring through the two rings you just added, making sure to go around, not through, their eye.

Step 6: Pass a ring through all 3 of the previous rings. It should go through the eye of the rings from Steps 3 & 4, and through the ring from Step 5. It should end up on the right side of the chain.

Step 7: Pass another ring through the 3 rings from Steps 3 - 5. It should end up on the left side of the chain, and stay in front of the ring from the previous step.

Step 8: Turn the chain over, and pass a ring through (what is now) the left eye and around the (now) right eye.

Step 9: Pass a ring around the left eye, and through the right eye, making sure to keep it in front of the ring you just added.

Step 10: Turn the chain over, and pass a ring around the eye of the two rings you added in the previous steps. This is the same as Step 5.

Step 11: Pass a ring through the eye, and through the ring you just added, keeping it on the right side of the chain.

Step 12: Pass a ring through the eye, and through the ring you just added, keeping it on the left side of the chain and above the ring you just added.

Step 13: Flip the chain over and pass a ring through the left eye and around the right eye.

Step 14: Pass a ring around the left eye and through the right eye, keeping it in front of the ring you just added.

Step 15: Repeat Steps 10 - 14 until the chain is the desired length.
