Byzantine Quatrefoil Necklace

Use this chain maille component to make a necklace and matching jewellery pieces from a bracelet to a belt.​

Materials

For a 49cm necklace, you will need:
  • 80 ice blue saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm - A
  • 64 ice pink saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm - A
  • 64 lavender saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm - A
  • 64 ice green saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm - A
  • 50 ice blue saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 5mm, WD 1.2mm - B
  • 40 ice pink saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 5mm, WD 1.2mm - B
  • 40 lavender saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 5mm, WD 1.2mm - B
  • 40 ice green saw cut anodised aluminium jump rings, ID 5mm, WD 1.2mm - B
  • 70 bright aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 6.9mm, WD 1.29mm - C
  • 17 large bright aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 17.1mm, WD 2.00mm - D
  • 4 (clasp rings) bright aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 3.2mm, WD 1.29mm - E
  • 15mm silver plated lobster clasp
Each component measures 2cm in diameter. Each component with one pair of joining rings C measures 3cm long.​

Tools:
  • two pairs of smooth jawed chain nose, flat nose, or bent nose pliers

Instructions

  1. Close eight small ice blue jump rings (A). Link two closed ice blue small rings (A) with two ice blue small rings (A) so that you have four sets of joined rings.

  2. Join the four sets of joined rings from step 1 by linking two bright aluminium rings (C) through two of the small rings from each set. The centre bright aluminium rings (C) will now have four arms (left hand picture).

    Fold back the end two rings on one of the arms, as shown in the centre picture.

    Open out the two arm rings that are attached to the centre rings (C) to create a pathway through the four arm rings as denoted by the arrow (right hand picture)

  3. Close one large bright aluminium ring (D) - you may find this easier to do with your fingers rather than with pliers.

    Weave one large ice blue ring (B) through the pathway created in step 2 and link to the closed large ring (D). (left hand picture).

    Repeat with a second ice blue ring (B) (right hand picture).

  4. Bring the centre bright aluminium rings and their four arms inside the closed large ring (D). Repeat steps 2-3 to join the second arm to the closed large bright aluminium ring (D).

  5. Repeat steps 2-3 to link the third and fourth arms to the closed large bright aluminium ring (D) (left hand picture).

    Add a third large ice blue ring (B) to each arm at 6 and 12 o'clock (right hand picture).

  6. Repeat steps 1-5 to make sixteen components - four of each colour (ice blue, ice pink, lavender and ice green).

  7. You will now join the components to make a chain. Weave one bright aluminium ring (C) through the attaching rings of the three o'clock spoke of one component and the nine o'clock spoke of the next component - these are the spokes with two attaching rings (B). The linking ring may overlap the large bright aluminiumrings (D). Repeat on the underside of the components so that they are linked with two bright aluminium rings (C).

  8. Repeat step 7 to make two chains using eight components each in the following colour order: ice blue, ice green, lavender, ice pink.

  9. Repeat step 1-5 to make the last ice blue component but with the three rings attaching the arms at 5 and 7 o'clock as shown.

    This is the centre component to which the two chains made in step 8 will be attached. Making the chain into a v-neck chain will help it hang properly.

  10. Attach the two component chains at the ice pink ends to the component made in step 9, joining the two rings (B) of each component with two bright aluminium rings (C) as in step 7.

  11. Link two bright aluminium rings (C) to each end of the necklace.

    Link two clasp rings to each pair of bright aluminium rings (C) just added, attaching the clasp to one ring before closing.

Variations

  • For a neutral look try black, black ice, gold, and champagne for the spokes.
  • Rainbow colours are great for summer or try shades of colour for each component.
