Photo Tutorial Glass Ring Ocean Waves

Author's Note
Our projects were very popular during the lifetime of our business and we wanted to ensure they continued to provide inspiration for chain maillers whatever their experience. It's a pleasure to see they will live on with Chainmaillers.com

Glass Ring Ocean Waves

Make this stunning easy-to-make chain using glass rings with bronze in this mobius-based weave. This is an adaptation of the Ocean Waves weave by 925maille.

Materials

For a 17.5cm bracelet, you will need:
  • 40 large bronze saw cut jump rings, ID 10.4mm, WD 1.29mm
  • 44 ice blue anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm
  • 8 peridot Czech glass rings - 9.6mm
  • 4 small bronze saw cut jump rings, ID 3.4mm, WD 1.29mm - clasp rings
  • copper plated sunburst Tierracast toggle - 17x21mm
Notes: You can also make this chain using jewellers brass or stainless steel (see the bottom of the page for inspiration). Or why not try sterling silver with anodised niobium?

Glass Rings - strongly coloured transparent or opaque glass rings produce the most striking results.

Tools:
  • two pairs of smooth jawed chain nose, flat nose, or bent nose pliers

Instructions

  1. Close all the ice blue rings and open the large bronze rings.

Using one large bronze ring, link one closed ice blue ring, one glass ring and one closed ice blue ring. Close the bronze ring. Weave a second large bronze ring following the same path as the first ring. Position the ice blue rings and the glass ring as shown.

  2. You will weave the next two large bronze rings in the mobius weave - weaving in from the front and exiting at the back.

Using one large bronze ring weave from the front and clockwise through the ice blue rings and the glass ring just added to exit at the back and beneath the pair of large bronze rings. Add four closed ice blue rings before closing the large bronze ring (left hand picture).

Repeat with a second large bronze ring, following the same pathway as the first large bronze ring (right hand picture).

  3. The next two large bronze rings are woven in the mobius weave but from the back and exiting at the front.

Using one large bronze ring weave from the back and clockwise through the four ice blue rings just added to exit at the front of the pair of large bronze rings. Add one closed ice blue ring, one glass ring and one closed ice blue ring before closing the large bronze ring (left hand picture).

Repeat with a second large bronze ring, following the same pathway as the first large bronze ring (right hand picture).

  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to continue the chain until it is the required length.

  5. You will now add one large bronze ring that will encircle each set of two ice blue rings and glass ring.

Weave one large ring from the front and clockwise through the centre of the right hand pair of large bronze rings linked to the glass ring. Continue to weave the ring through the centre of the left hand large bronze rings so that it exits at the back of the pair of large rings. Close the ring.

  6. Repeat step 5 along the length of the chain.

  7. Using one small bronze clasp ring link the toggle ring to one end of the chain (left hand picture).

Link the toggle bar to the other end of the chain using three small bronze clasp rings.

Variations

  • Try jewellers brass with red glass rings and black ice jump rings.
  • Bright aluminium with black glass rings and a bold colour such as rose pink or red looks striking.
