Ponied European 4-1 Bracelet

Make this easy strip of European 4-1 and add 6mm pony beads by joining sets of three edge rings for eye-catching effect.

Make a matching necklace. For instructions, click here.

For a 18cm (7 inch) bracelet, you will need:
  • 30 red Czech glass pony beads - 6mm
  • 136 silver anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 4.2mm, WD 1.2mm - A
  • 30 silver anodised aluminium saw cut jump rings, ID 5mm, WD 1.2mm - B
  • silver plated jubilee heart Tierracast toggle - 14x17mm
  • two pairs of smooth jawed chain nose, flat nose, or bent nose pliers

  1. Link four closed rings A with one ring A. Position the rings as shown in the left hand picture, making sure that you orientate the rings in exactly the same way.

Weave one open silver ring through the lower left hand ring and through the lower right hand ring. Add two closed silver rings before closing the jump ring (centre picture).

Repeat until the chain is the desired length and the edge rings are divisible by three (right hand picture). When you add the pony beads, this will shorten the chain length slightly.

  2. Using one ring B, weave through the first three edge rings of your chain, add one pony bead and close the jump ring (left hand picture).

Repeat on the opposite side of the chain, making sure that you weave the ring B in the same way as the first ring B (right hand picture).

  3. Repeat step 2, weaving one ring B through the next set of three rings on each side of the chain.

  4. Repeat step 2 until you have added pony beads along the length of the chain on both sides. If the chain is not long enough, add sets of three rows as in step 1 and add further pony beads as in step 2.

  5. Attach the toggle ring and toggle bar to each end using one ring A each time.

  • Use a different coloured jump ring as the centre joining ring in step 1 to match or contrast with the pony beads.
  • For a monochrome look, try black rings with white opal or opaque white beads.
  • This bracelet can also be made using copper, bronze, jewellers brass or stainless steel.
